INSTITUTE FOR VIRAL AND LIVER DISEASES

Inserm U1110 Strasbourg

At the Institute for Viral and Liver Diseases – Inserm U1110 Strasbourg, we are addressing major unmet medical needs:

  • limited strategies to prevent and treat advanced liver disease and cancer
  • complications of chronic viral infections
  • limitations of current treatments to cure HBV-induced chronic hepatitis
  • lack of treatment for new emerging viruses such as SARS-CoV-2

OUR INSTITUTE AND THE WORLDWIDE FIGHT AGAINST COVID

We have also joined the fight against COVID with a key project studying virus-host interactions, and effective strategies against the new variants that are emerging. The results of this program have a high potential for rapid translation into the clinic by the development of urgently needed novel antiviral strategies.

OUR COLLABORATION WITH CLINICIANS

In a joint program with Inserm, University of Strasbourg and the Strasbourg University Hospitals, we achieve unique synergies allowing the identification of novel targets for preventive and therapeutic strategies against viral infection and advanced liver disease including liver cancer.

Interdisciplinary teamwork, a collaborative approach, and a forward-thinking attitude are pivotal elements contributing to the success of the institute.

Thomas F. Baumert, MD is Professor of Medicine, head of the Inserm Research Institute for Viral and Liver Diseases (Inserm UMR_S1110), director of the Laboratory of Excellence HepSYS at the University of Strasbourg and Chair of Hepatology at the Pole Hépato-Digestif at the Strasbourg University Hospital.

His work has led to major discoveries and he has mentored over 50+ PhD and postdoc fellows. He is a word-class leader in liver diseases with an innovative program focusing on translational research and innovation. He has received several prestigious awards including the PRIX MÉMAIN-PELLETIER – Fondation de l’Institut de France (2020), ERC Advanced Grants, LabEx.

By establishing unique synergies and uncovering key biological circuits underlying liver disease pathogenesis, we aim to develop novel therapeutics and preventive strategies to address these major unmet medical needs.”
