About us

The Institute for Translational Medicine and Liver Disease (ITM) is a leading research organization focused on the investigation of the disease biology and discovery of novel therapeutics for liver diseases and cancer and their translation into clinical applications.

Based in Strasbourg, France, our institute is a joint research unit under the supervision of the University of Strasbourg and Inserm.

At ITM, we are addressing major unmet medical needs:

  • Prevention and treatment of advanced liver cancer
  • Identify noninvasive biomarkers to predict disease progression and cancer risk
  • Understand molecular mechanisms driving disease development
  • Understand the role of the microbiome in the pathogenesis of liver disease and cancer
  • Advance treatments to cure chronic hepatitis B and D virus infection, a major cause of liver cancer
A team of diverse and highly skilled researchers and support staff

Our team, research groups and platforms include highly qualified faculty members, senior and junior scientists, bioinformaticians, clinicians, surgeons, engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel that work closely together to build our excellent research and training programs.

Top class research targeting major unmet medical needs through strong collaborative research programs

Our success builds on both our internal work as well as on strong international collaborations with top level scientists, clinicians and drug developers in universities, hospitals and pharmaceutical companies. We are invested in several interdisciplinary research programs allowing us to create unique synergies.

Training the next generation of highly skilled researchers in translational medicine

We believe in the importance of training young researchers, to equip them with the knowledge and the technical skills necessary to become successful as leaders of the future. Our cutting-edge program in translational research attracts top level PhD, MD, Master’s candidates as well as distinguished early career scientists. We are part of the E-IMCBIO graduate program and the doctoral school for Life Sciences and Health form the Strasbourg university
